Grandma's Dishes

These dishes gave me my first, real, and true shoppers’
 “OMG ARE THOSE REALLY THEM?
SOMEONE PINCH ME!
 … PLEASE DON’T BE EXPENSIVE…”
moment.

Last week I went for a 10 mile radius marathon of Goodwills and Thrift stores.  My original finish line was a 3-4 gallon pot for a hobby Jason and I share.  But things started going off track when I found a church sponsored Thrift store with vintage sewing patterns, needlepoint volumes, and Martha stewart books for a quarter each.

My Thrift Store Score

After that $8.00 score, I landed at a Goodwill right by Cal State Fullerton just to quickly breeze through their cooking section.  I was having little luck finding that finish line when, to my surprise, I saw a glow of light as I turned down the next aisle.  Then, it happened.  That moment.  That high every addict chases:
A almost complete set of Autumn Baroque china dishware my Grandma had in her cupboards for as long as I can remember.
I have been searching for these dishes, not knowing anything but what they visually looked like. I quickly texted my brother, and he confirmed it.  These were the same ones!  For $19.99 I found a dish set that brought me a comfort I have longed for.  Already, I can sense fleeting memories of two of the most precious people in my life being restored.  Some of them being morning pancakes after waking up in the Princess Bed, tuna sandwiches in between hours of gardening in the summer, dinners after I showered from volleyball practice, late night ice cream talks, and heart-warming recipes I wish I knew.
I only have a few simple things from each of the important people I have lost in my life, and am well aware that items do not take place of the person’s absence.  These dishes are not the same ones she possessed, but, these dishes are symbolic of a lot of who I am and are a great representation of the impact my Grandma had on me and the things I love today.  I am so thankful to have found these.

  1. Touching story. I connected with how certain things bring distant love closer. Your comments on all the memories...pancakes, late night ice cream, etc. -- beautiful! Your description of chasing delights in thrift stores, etc. -- fun to read! Very descriptive. Enjoy your dishes.

  2. It’s truly inspiring. This made me want to go to my grandma’s house and hug her tight. Wave you stayed with your grandmother under one roof? When I was a child, I lived with my grandma, and she was practically my mom then. She always took care of me and brought me to school everyday.
