It is mid September and 88 Degrees outside. But that has not made me skip a beat in baking.
Jason and I like to give homemade, from the heart, sweet and savory baskets to our family as our Christmas present to them. Last year, Jason and I made a variety of different treats. The main gift given was home-baked White Bread with a mason jar of homemade Apple Butter. This was SUCH a hit!
This year, however, Fiona is due on December 29th, 2012 which could very well mean she is in my arms Christmas Day J So, I have thought ahead and have decided we will hand out our goodie baskets on or around Thanksgiving. (Which, I think is a smarter way to give gifts like this because those who receive them will be able to enjoy the treats before they are burnt out on Holiday food.)
We had a few jars of Apple Butter left over from last year. Just recently, we have been vibing those holiday flavors again. We are down to our last jar, a quart sized jar, and plan to devour that thing during the next few weeks. The apple butter we made has to be eaten by Christmas of this year, due to its 1 year shelf life.
So, Jason asked me to bake him his favorite thing to eat with cold Apple Butter: Biscuits. I told him no prob. I whipped some up yesterday. After baking him a batch, I realized what a better time than then to get back into the swing of baking bread.
I have been watching The British Bake Off show and it rekindled my desire to not just learn a simple white bread, but more elaborate breads. I love baking cupcakes, muffins, scones, ets. But I absolutely love the process of bread making. And, I am not too shabby at it. So, I have decided that I will bake a new type of bread each week.
This week I began the extravaganza with my test trial of an old faithful. The White Bread. And with the success of that loaf, I can assuredly also tell you that HOLIDAY BAKING HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN!
Not only will there be a new bread a week, but a new baked or canned treat a week! I have 2 months to find and finalize holiday baking recipes and am so excited!
CHEERS!
