Last night I was browsing around the internet when I found out a needlework legend passed away a few days ago, Erica Wilson. Erica Wilson graduated from the Royal School of Needlework in London and was then invited to teach here in the states in 1954. I have never looked into the history of embroidering, the common knowledge of when and why women embroidered has always been sufficient for me personally.
Little did I know, there are and have been schools that actually teach embroidering classes and offer degree programs in the perfection of embroidery art. Are you as shocked as I am? Maybe I have just been out of the loop, ironically, since I am the only one I personally know that enjoys embroidering.
Moving forward. I became interested to see if this school still existed today, and IT DOES! If you can believe it, this school actually offers degree programs to pursue a professional career path in embroidery. From my reading, this degree program has only been launched since 2009 and is accredited by the University of Creative Arts. The program is a 2 year full-time study commitment and is the only one of its kind in the UK. Oh and by the way, there are scholarships available for this program.
This is BLOWING my mind!!! Almost to the extent of when I found out there are scholarships offered to women who would like to become Brewmasters.
